Breaking into Fashion & Modeling

I'm dead set on starting my career early. That's the great thing about loving your job, you will be motivated to wake up everyday knowing that you are perusing your dreams. Living in a small town is not easy when it comes to wanting to gain experience in a field that doesn't have an influence on your community. Sure, I could be a doctor, a teacher, or a lawyer.. but if I don't LOVE it, then what's the point? I'm not going to spend everyday doing something I hate.
I've been reaching out to people in the fashion industry, hoping to get advice on how I can get a head start on my career. How can I do this..being in high school...in a small town? I sent in my question to Nikki Phillippi.. I love her! She is so real & I value what she says. I'm so happy she answered my question. Although, I mentioned my blog in my message, I suppose they overlooked it.. many people in the comments say to start a blog.. haha. One step ahead.
I'm planning on going to college at FIT in NYC to be a fashion stylist. If any of you know someone or have went to college for fashion please contact me! I would love to hear all about it!
Well, I must be doing pretty good then.. I'm connecting with those who share my passion, reaching out to those already in the business, and have my future planned. Everything Nikki suggested.. That makes me feel a little bit better. :)

Watch to see Nikki answer my question.

Let me know your thoughts/suggestions. Are you planning on a career in fashion?
If you watched the video or have read my previous posts, I'm also trying to get into modeling.. Anyone have experience?

  2. Try to get a fashion related internship could be beneficial too. So that you can really see and feel to make sure that's the career you'd wanna pursue. Best of luck!!

    1. I just mean that being a doctor, teacher, etc are things that I would easily be able to get involved with in my area, whereas fashion is very uncommon. I wish you the best of luck! :)

  11. best of luck with getting into fashion! as with everything, you never know how much you'll like something until you really try it out for the first time. I know someone from my high school (I used to live in a small suburb too) who goes to FIDM in LA, and I know she really enjoys it, although it's a lot more work than she thought it would be!
also, thanks for your comment on my post! I study at UC Berkeley, and am currently studying abroad in London at the London School of Economics :) definitely try to study abroad in college if you can - it'll be one of the best experiences you have during college, and it'll definitely make you appreciate everything about where you end up studying as well as where you came from too.

  14. good luck with your dreams! Work hard and never give up. It's easier said then done I know, but never give up your dreams!! I know someone who is going to school for fashion. She's in the same grade as me and she is a freshman next year. My advice for you is to try and get some volunteer work or maybe an internship in a fashion related position!

    1. I'm hoping to get an internship while I'm in college. The closet city to me is 2 hours away.. so.. It kinda makes it difficult, but it will all work out. Thanks for the support! :)

  15. I work at a modelling agency/ just started breaking into the fashion industry this year. The one thing I would recommend is not necessarily building an online presence. I mean don't get me wrong, it's good to have an online representation of your work especially this day in age. But for your specific sectors (modeling and styling) its more about networking with a lot of people. That being said, going to school for fashion communications, or that sector would give you a huge advantage. I've been to a fair share of interviews in the fashion industry and surprisingly not many care about online presence (except in the PR and Social Marketing sectors)! Good luck though! Get confident in front of a camera and apply to agencies in your area, I see you working out well as a commercial model, but you could always build on that! Best of luck!

    1. Thanks! I'm currently networking with people on model mayhem! I'm planning on going to FIT in NYC to be a stylist. I think modeling is a perfect fit for me to break into the fashion industry at a young age, and become a stylist later on.
